Why Sleep is so Important for Your Growing Pup

ree

There’s nothing quite as heart-melting as watching a puppy curled up in a ball, snoring softly, and twitching mid-dream. While it's tempting to wake them for cuddles or play, those long snoozes are doing more than just recharging their tiny batteries, they are essential for healthy development.

Why Do Puppies Sleep So Much?

Unlike adult dogs, who may sleep around 12 - 14 hours a day, puppies can sleep up to 18 - 20 hours within a 24 hour period. That might seem excessive, but there is a good reason for it.

Puppies are in a rapid stage of growth. Every moment they are awake is filled with learning, exploring, and building their understanding of the world. Just like human babies, puppies need extra rest to help their bodies and brains process all this new information and energy use.

The Role of Sleep in Brain Development

During sleep, a puppy's brain processes everything it learnt while awake -social cues, new smells, sounds, and basic training. Sleep strengthens memory and supports emotional development. In fact, research shows that animals (including dogs) consolidate learning during sleep, which means your puppy is literally getting smarter while napping!

Sleep Supports Physical Growth

Growth hormones are primarily released during deep sleep. These hormones help build muscle, develop bones, and strengthen the immune system. So if your puppy is sleeping a lot after a growth spurt that is perfectly normal and healthy.

What Happens When Puppies Don’t Get Enough Sleep?

Overtired puppies can become irritable, hyperactive, or even aggressive. Just like toddlers, they don’t always know they are tired. They may act out, forget training, or get overly excited during play. Lack of sleep can also weaken their immune system, making them more susceptible to illness.

How to Help Your Puppy Get the Sleep It Needs

  • Create a calm sleep environment. A quiet, comfortable crate or bed in a low-traffic area works well.

  • Establish a routine. Regular feeding, play, and potty times help puppies relax and anticipate rest.

  • Don’t overstimulate. Puppies need downtime after play or training—don’t push for “one more game” when they’re showing signs of sleepiness.

  • Let them nap undisturbed. No matter how cute they look, resist the urge to wake them. They need uninterrupted rest to thrive.

Clinical Canine Massage and Sleep

When a dog, (puppy or adult) has canine massage therapy, their parasympathetic nervous system is triggered into action. The parasympathetic nervous system stimulates relaxation allowing the body the recuperate and rest.

Final Thoughts

Puppies may seem like balls of endless energy, but their real superpower lies in their naps. Each snooze is building a smarter, stronger, healthier dog. So the next time your puppy crashes mid chew or curls up right after a walk, let them rest easy, you’re watching nature’s magic at work.
